How to Pick a Paint Color for the Interior of Your Home

Are you ready to enhance your home with a fresh, new look? Painting your walls a new color of paint is an inexpensive and simple way to dramatically improve the appearance of your home.

Choosing the right color of paint, however, can be difficult. Two things that you need to take into consideration are mood and lighting.

Consider the Mood

For your bedroom, you want a paint color that is soothing and calming to aid in rest and relaxation. It should feel like a sanctuary, a place you can escape from your busy life. Soft, cool tones and neutrals are the best way to go.

Notice in the example of our work in the photo below how our client chose a soft yet dark shade of earthy green paint to complement their tan carpet. By contrasting with white, the room transforms into a warm yet inviting place to relax.

For kids’ bedrooms, you should avoid very bright colors because you do not want to over stimulate them. Bright colors can cause unrest and irritability. You will thank me for this tip when you’re trying to get them to go to bed!

Of course, you want them to have a room that is fun and inviting, but you don’t need bright colors to do that. Instead, paint a wall, or section of the wall, with dry erase or chalkboard paint and let them draw on the walls. Hey, they’re probably going to do it anyway. It’s best to stay one step ahead and encourage their creativity.

Dining rooms should feel warm, comfortable and help stimulate your appetite. Choosing contrasting shades of warm, earthy tones is a great way to do this. Notice in the example of our work in the photo below how our client chose a warm, soft beige to compliment the dark shade of red and counters. The colors really tie together well and create an inviting space for the family to come together and talk about their day.

Consider the Lighting

Natural daylight will show the truest color. If your living room brings in a lot of sunlight, be careful not to choose a bright color in this space. Instead, you should go with a soft earth tone that is pleasing to the eye and compliments the environment. Notice in the example of our work in the photo below how the paint color allows for the natural beauty of nature shine through.

Incandescent lighting brings out warm tones and yellow, while fluorescent lighting casts a sharp blue tone. You can in the example of our work in the photo below how the lighting illuminates different tones. If your kitchen has both types of lighting, you might want to do what this homeowner did and chose a neutral tone. Depending on the color of your cabinets, you may want a lighter shade to contrast and compliment.
